English Tip of the Day

Wednesday October 17, 2007
The English tip of the day newsletter provides an e-mail each day with an English usage tip with sentence examples. For example:

Use the future with "going to" to make predictions about an event about to happen based on evidence that something is about to happen soon.

Look at those clouds! It's going to rain.
Be careful! You're going to drop those plates.

There is also a Quiz of the Day and Worksheet of the Day. Taking this newsletter is a great way of doing a bit of English every day to improve vocabulary and skills. The tips, quizzes and worksheets start off easy. As the months go by, you'll be working on advanced level English.

(3) Roberto says:

You use the infinitive with “going to”, not the future. When you say “we are going to … [+ infinitive]” it says something will occur in the near future. The same structure exists in Romance languages. Eg: Vamos a comer pronto = We are going to eat soon. It works for first, second, and third persons, singular or plural, and in most tenses and moods.
