(18) Aisha says:

Hi!
I have one question. I wanted to know when to use an infitive after the preposition ‘to’. In this sentence for example, we say ‘ I am looking forward to hearing from you’ and not ‘I am looking forward to hear from you’. Is there a rule for that?
Thk you in advance

February 3, 2009 at 5:34 pm
(19) esl says:

Hello,

‘to’ is part of the phrasal verb ‘to look forward to’. Phrasal verbs usually end in prepositions and prepositions are always followed the the ‘ing’ form of the verb.

I hope this helps.
