While I’m personally a big fan of the subjunctive, I wonder if ESL students will master a distinction that a great many EFL college-bound high school seniors would not. Shouldn’t the goal of ESL be to achieve a simple level which, while technically wrong, is always understandable because so many Americans speak that way. For instance, they don’t know what the subjunctive is and they use the past tense whenever the subjunctive is called for. It may not be “correct,” but it works.
