Study Skills - Make English Learning a Habit

By , About.com Guide   June 24, 2011

Follow me on:

Learning any language takes practice - lots of practice! Often, it's difficult to know what you should practice.

  • Should you watch a video?
  • Perhaps, it would be a good idea to do a few quizzes.
  • Of course, you should try to speak English with your friends.

All of these are great ideas, but it's also important to build a routine. A routine will help you make studying English a habit. That's the best way to improve your English!

I think it’s an interesting idea to make learning English a habit but the crucial thing is how?maybe we have to make more efforts and we should practice any activity that has a relation with English and that can improve our English.I find that listening to English songs is a good way to stay in touch with it especially for the E S L learners as my case.

i think the best way to learning Enlish is to take the useful course, and gain all the knowlege from it. You should keep practise and learning new English very day, and always take change to practise English, utilize any means, watching TV, and reading newspaper, comunicate with your friends, The most important thing, to me, i the guide answer whenever your have question. that the reason why you should save time to take part in English Class which is sitable for your level

(6) Carol Quinn says:

I tutor Japanese students, and I always tell my students to watch the Weather Channel when they have a little extra time. Sometimes the vocabulary is a little limited, but the pronunciation is great, and the biggest benefit comes from seeing where all the states are, and locating the different regions, rivers, etc. It’s a great way to SEE the US map, and seeing is often better than just reading about something.

There is something I’d like to tell you all, not only by practising you will be fluent, you should use your four main skills; listening leads to speaking and reading leads to writing so practising is by listening and reading as a first step

Ken—YOU ROCK!! I teach beginners and these sites and links you’re suggesting are THE BEST. Simple English News and Easy English Times are excellent. In fact, I’m sending a copy of the article to my students. Thanks a lot for your help. Keep up the good work!

All these steps are necessary for foreign language learners.

Habits are really hard to brake or make.
When I first learned English I practiced sentences with the furniture, the plants, and the animals in English. Now I have almost no accent, but it took many years of practice. Now I am teaching English to Costa Rica’s most unique sculptor. Kenneth THANK YOU for your help!

These comments all seem to be about improving your English. This is good but the article doesn’t really address actual ‘Study Skills’ necessary to continue on to University programs, etc. A good example would be ‘Note Taking techniques’
