Words that Go Together

By , About.com GuideJune 27, 2011

Follow me on:

Some words in English need each other like best friends. For example: I made a cup of tea. The verb 'make' and 'cup of tea' need each other to be correct. Using another verb such as 'do' would be incorrect. These words that go together are called collocations. There are strong collocations and weaker collocations, but it's a good idea to learn these words together. This guide to collocations provides an in-depth explanation of collocations, as well as links to numerous collocation resources here on the site.

Here are some common collocation games to get you started:

Combinations with Take, Have and Break
Combinations with Catch, Pay and Keep
Combinations with Save, Find and Go
Combinations with Come, Get and Feel
Combinations with Miss, Get, Do and Make

Dear Kenneth,

I wanted to take a ”test” you prepared for collocations and I see that in the drop-down list only 1 verb is listed (the correct one) instead of 3 as it is stated in instructions.
