Putting Words into the Correct Order

By , About.com GuideJune 19, 2012

Follow me on:

It's sometimes difficult to know where to place words in sentences. For example, in the first sentence 'sometimes' - an adverb of frequency - is placed after the main verb 'to be' which is an exception to the rule! The adjective 'difficult' follows the linking verb 'be' and 'where to place words in sentences' is a noun clause acting as the object of the verb 'know'. Whew!!

This guide to basic word order will help you understand where to place adjectives and adverbs, as well as direct objects and indirect objects.
