Having Something Done for You

By , About.com GuideAugust 3, 2012

Follow me on:

I had my car washed last week. This is an example of the causative form. Causative verbs express the idea that someone causes something to be done. Some everyday expressions using the causative form include:

Have your hair washed / styled / done
Have your car washed
Have your house painted
Have your dinner prepared

Another causative form is make someone do. This form is much stronger and is used in relationships that express the idea that someone has a certain authority over someone else:

He made me do the homework.
She made me attend the concert.
etc.
