cold spell or cold snap

Definition: a sudden, often unexpected, short period of cold weather

Explanation: Used when expressing surprise at how cold the weather is. Also used to speak about an unusually cold period of weather.

Examples: We've been having quite a cold snap recently. - Do you remember that horrible cold spell last winter?
