Definition: something done for the joy of doing it

Explanation: Used when speaking about a task that is done for the enjoyment of doing that task, and not to attain some other goal.

Examples: In my opinion, cooking is an end in itself - sometimes I don't even eat what I have cooked! - You can't really believe that he does his job as an end in itself.
