eyes are bigger than one`s stomach

Definition: desire more than one can eat or handle

Explanation: Often used figuratively when talking about someone who desires more than he / she can really afford.

Examples: I told him his eyes were bigger than his stomach when he said he wanted to buy a new Mercedes. - I'm afraid my eyes were bigger than my stomach - I feel awful, I've eaten too much.
