Pronunciation, Grammar and Writing Software
There are a number of pronunciation programs available on the market and they generally run from moderately priced to rather expensive. Unfortunately, the software that is available focuses solely on pronunciation using Standard American Pronunciation. Future titles will hopefully also include standard British, Australian or other types of pronunciation styles. Here is what I've found:
-
Accent Technologies
This reasonably priced software goes beyond voice recording and playback to include student pronunciation analysis using visual examples and comparison charts. Students can then use these charts to compare their pronunciation with model pronunciation examples in a visual manner. - American Speech Sounds This straightforward listen and repeat type software offers various packages beginning at $89 and going to $399. The focus is on listening and repeating, as well as special specific language help sections.
-
Easy Writer
Editing and writing program piloted for 2 years in New York by Jane Boris. Easy Writer allows ESL users to choose reading, grammar and correction strategies for over 60 essays written by other ESL students. Reasonable price, well worth a look. -
WriteWell
Developed by writing teachers for writing teachers, this program focuses on teaching and learning by means of (often interactive) written discourse -- encouraging collaborative work, critical thinking skills, and communication.
-
Exceller ESL Software
Exceller software offers basic grammar tutorial software as well as reference materials software.
