The following should give you an idea of a standard curriculum for beginning to intermediate level courses. Generally, each level goes through the basic grammar skills repeating what has been learned before, but increases the breadth of knowledge in each area. This recycling of language learning is necessary as review is an essential part of the process by which a language is learned.
- Basic language skills and review of previously learned structures:
- For beginners this phase focuses on the verb "to be" - My name is Ken. What is your name? etc. Possessives - my, your, his etc., alphabet, numbers, basic facts
- For higher level courses the beginning usually focuses on reviewing a broad range of tenses to help raise awareness of which tenses are used, and to also help students and teachers recognize problem areas. The basic tenses include: simple present, simple past, future with going to, and the present perfect
