The Presentation

The following paragraphs will deal with the contents of the presentation. As an example, the presentation of nine-year-old students from a primary school will be analyzed.

This is a sample presentation, created in Microsoft PowerPoint. This is its start page which has 10 links to the particular parts of the presentation. It should be noted that other parts of the presentation can have different designs. The advantage of this kind of presentations is that the teacher can choose the design at the beginning, and when students acquire the knowledge they can change it into the design of their liking.

We are III1 class - this link takes us to an about us page of the presentation - it introduces us with the class and offers links to the personal pages of individual students. Those pages are very important because there each student presents himself / herself (his name, friends, family, what he/she likes/dislikes, where he/she lives, what he/she does for fun etc.). Students choose the layout of their personal pages themselves and add the content themselves (For example, after the unit about sports they add sentences such as I like basketball. I play basketball every Sunday; after the unit about family they add information about their family such as: "I have a brother. His name is Peter." - or - "My mother's name is Joan. She is an engineer." etc.).

We like to write - This is the presentation of the written activities students did during the class. An example could be a story with 4 ends (Teacher divides students in four groups and gives them an open-ended story to finish, and at the end of the class students compare the endings. After that the story is added to the presentation with the links to all four ends) or a story composed from students' sentences during a class (Teacher writes a sentence and asks a student to continue the story by writing another sentence and when all students have added a sentence the whole story is read aloud (and added to the presentation later)).

We like to read - Teacher chooses a few students to read the lessons from the textbook and records those readings. This way the lesson is personalized because students know the person reading the text and they can practice reading at home.

We like to draw - A collection of drawings made during English classes (for example, they can be related to the new vocabulary) - those drawings are scanned and added to the presentation with a short explanation in English.

We like to sing - A collection of songs they have learned, recorded during classes (whole class singing) - A more experienced teacher can even make something like a karaoke machine (in PowerPoint).

We like to act - A collection of filmed dialogues (situations from the textbook or short scenes from plays, films etc.), followed by comprehension questions (added by the teacher).

Our dictionary - A class dictionary consisting of all the words they have learned up to that moment (words can be classified alphabetically or by the lesson in which they appear), every word has a separate page with a drawing and / or an example sentence.

Our tests - A collection of tests for practicing grammar and vocabulary. Every time students add the content to the presentation (twice a month) the teacher adds tests (this way students see the testing as the teacher's contribution to the presentation).

Our photos - A collection of students' photos (from English classes, excursions, birthday parties etc.), every photo has a short explanation in English. This is a great way to personalize the presentation.

Our projects - A collection of individual projects students did for the English class, as well as for other classes (if it is a project for some other class, students write a short explanation of it in English). It is very important that students regard this presentation as their presentation, not only as a presentation of their English class and therefore other things they do in school (as well as out of the school - such as: sports, hobbies, etc.) should be included.
