How to Make a Multimedia Presentation in Your English Class

By Marko Bankovic

Step By Step

Requirements:

In order to make a presentation as a class project, you must have a computer with  PowerPoint or similar presentation software installed. PPPCD or similar software installed - this is a free software, which allows you to create an auto run CD with PowerPoint shows; CD-RW device and CD burning software; CD-RWs for every student.

Step 1: Get Familiar with the Software

Try to make a presentation on your own. It is always wise to first to do yourself something you want to teach others. Get familiar with the software.

Step 2: Make a Questionnaire

Make a questionnaire for your students. How many of them have computers at home? do they like working on computers? etc. You will plan the activities based on these data (for example, you cannot expect that your students will show the presentation to their parents and thus revise vocabulary if most of them do not have computers at home - in that case you would need to make more public presentations; etc.)

Step 3: Motivate the Students

Motivate the students and introduce the idea of making a presentation.

Step 4: Example Presentation

Create an example presentation for your class. Start small. It does not to start as a project which will impress everyone. It is enough that every student creates a small presentation with the basic information about him / her (name, address, family…).

Step 5: Make Sure Students Are Comfortable with Making a Presentation

Analyze step 4. Were the students motivated? Is it time-consuming? Could you cope with bigger tasks? If you do not feel secure - stop. It is better to stop now than later (students will not feel that they failed to make the class presentation - they will feel personal achievement because they created small personal presentations).

Step 6: Gather More Material

Every time you teach something new try to use it for the presentation. Take five minutes of the class and instruct the students to write a few personal sentences to put into the presentation. Let those be sentences about what you have been talking about during that class. Help your students articulate their thoughts and feelings.

Step 7: Adding Content to the Presentation

Organize a class in the computer-classroom during which students will add the content they have been gathering in their notebooks during previous classes. Help students with the software and design as well as content. Unite all the personal presentations into one class presentation. Add additional content (reading, writing, acting…). Use positive and personal statements (such as We like to… write instead of just written material, our dictionary instead of dictionary). Burn it as an auto run presentation (using PPPCD) on CD-RWs and give it to students to take home. Instruct them on how to use the presentation at home.

Repeat steps 6 and 7 as many times as necessary (until the end of the school year). Correct any mistakes and you now have a Final Version.

Step 8: Giving the Presentation

Make the public presentation of the work. Tell students to invite parents, friends etc. Let students help you organize that event. This final step is very important since it will give students the feeling of success which will keep them motivated until the next school year.
