Katherine Beare - ESL from a Child's Point of View

Background

Name: Katherine Beare

Age: 8

Grade: 3

Previous Education: Italian through 2nd grade

For the end of term, Ms McManus sent along a first trimester progress report for Katherine:

The third grade ESL group is composed of four students, so that the students get a lot of attention and one on one time. So far this year, the students read and then acted out a play. To supplement their third grade classroom, the students have been working through their writing process (first draft, edit, publish, share) to write imaginative stories. We have also read and written stories about immigrating to the United States.

Katherine is a great student to have in class. She is making great use of her oral language, and she encourages her classmates to do the same. Her reading ability and comprehension are improving. Her vocabulary is quite good, though we will continue to work on written grammar and punctuation. Overall Katherine is doing very well in class, she is excited to learn and consistently participates in all activities.

Progress Snapshot: Week 11 through end of first trimester (December 16)

Objectives: Writing skills, putting language to work in discussion, speaking about the immigration experience

Exercises: Writing skills through letters to grandparents, friends, etc., developing a family tree, reading and discussion about immigrants moving to the USA

Challenges: Writing, spelling, and sometimes reading

The most fun was: Reading about a girl who confused Christmas traditions by confusing dates on a calender with those you put on a cake, putting stuffing into Christmas stockings, etc.
