Katherine Beare

Katherine Beare - ESL from a Child's Point of View

Background

Name: Katherine Beare
Age: 8
Grade: 3
Previous Education: Italian through 2nd grade

Progress Snapshot: Ninth and Tenth Weeks October 31 - November 9

Objectives: Using descriptive language, work on math vocabulary

Exercises: Describing pictures from a magazine for other students to draw, dominoes (numbers)

Challenges: Drawing what the other kids described because you couldn't look.

The most fun was: Picking the picture out and describing it.

Katherine's comments about her class elementary school: "At class, we had 25 points that means that we can play half an hour and, after, we can watch 'I Love Lucy'."

Ken's Note: Katherine's sentence structure is becoming more complex. At times, she connects the ideas simply by using "and". However, she also is beginning to use relative pronouns such as who, where, etc. In communications, she has moved to speaking mostly English with me, and, at times preferring English to Italian at home when the family is together. She has also begun improving through "chunking" in her language use: i.e. using chunks of standard phrases that she is picking up from schoolmates rather than learning only new words.
