Katherine Beare - ESL from a Child's Point of View

Background

Name: Katherine Beare

Age: 8

Grade: 3

Previous Education: Italian through 2nd grade

This week Katherine had a 20 minutes class every day. There are only four children in class so Katherine has a good opportunity to use her English during the sessions. Focus was on re-creating a story entitled "Mrs McNosh and her Great Big Squash" which was read last week.

Progress Snapshot: Third Week September 19 - 23

Objectives: Writing, picture description, retelling a story.

Exercises: First re-create the story by writing, then draw pictures and describe the story. Finally, write a final version of the story without pictures.

Challenges: Spelling

The most fun was: Drawing the pictures

Katherine's comments about her first year in an elementary school: "We had some fire-drills, not real - fake. I like when everyone is listening and the storytime and sharing time. And I like the cafeteria. The other kids help me learn so it was like everyone was learning - not just me, the others, too."
