Here is an example of a teacher asking advice about the business of teaching English:

laten asks:

Hello with everybody!

Can you tell me how you decide the cost of giving private lessons? Do you make a parallel with the salary that you'd earn with a full time job?

Thanks in advance for your answers!

To which HenanMike responds:

Questions I ask myself:

1) Is this going to be fun, or at least, interesting?
2) How much time must I waste travelling?
3) Is the parent of the student powerful politically or economically? It is always nice to get a free pass from most of a foreign country's laws.

And M56revived adds:

Here, in Spain, it is normally about 25% more than an academy teacher's rate per. hour. A good idea is to phone the best local ESL academy and pretend that you, or a friend, want private lessons. Ask how much they charge and then charge your student a little less.
