By Kenneth Beare, About.com

Definition:

The gerund form is formed by adding '-ing' to the base form of the verb. For example, play -> playing. The gerund can be used in combination with other verbs. For example, He finished writing the report. Gerunds can also be used as a noun, often at the beginning of a sentence. For example, Playing golf is a wonderful way to take a long walk.
