Pronunciation Skills Objective

Learn the sound "th"

Type of Materials or Book Used

none

Type of Lesson Activities

Get used to making the th sound naturally.

Lesson Plan Format

Have all the students bite on their tongues and blow out. Walk around and make sure they are making the correct "th" sound.

Then have them blow out in breaths (make sound for two seconds--pause--make sound--pause--make sound--pause).

Then have them open their mouths after each sound. (make sound, open mouth, pause. make sound, open mouth, pause.)

I've found this gets them used to making the th sounds and is a very good warm up exercise!

Advice

  • If students are having difficulty making the sound, explain to them the tongue needs to touch the teeth in order to properly make the sound. Tell them that went you make s your tongue touches the bottom teeth, when you make d the tongue touches the roof of your mouth, but when you make th your tongue has to touch your teeth.
  • Make sure they understand air needs to escape the mouth a little bit when they make the sound.
