Teaching English abroad is a wonderful opportunity for many English teachers to travel and see the world. Of course, teaching English is a profession and the treatment of English teachers from contractual to cultural can vary greatly from country to country. These shared experiences will help teachers get insight into what might await them in various locations. Please make sure to provide the country and city where you taught. It's probably best not to include the name of the institution, as the purpose of this resource is to provide a general indication of conditions rather than an indictment of specific schools. NYC w/recent immigrants

I've been teaching ESL here for quite a few years. This year, my students are mostly from Ecuador. These people need to be able to ask for things in stores, improve their English to advance in their jobs and to be able to speak to their children's teachers. In other words, as part of the process of moving their entire lives from one country to another. Their level of education in their native country is a major factor, not just for transferring the language but for the self-confidence one needs to learn.

Teaching college in Mexico

I have been teaching English at a university in Cuernavaca for 6 years and I highly recommend it for anyone who may be interested. I really enjoy my students and even though I spend a lot of time preparing and correcting stuff it's much easier that my old job: teaching elementary school in the States. I honestly don't know what I would do without this website. I use it constantly. Of course one of the greatest benefits is that I have made many Mexican friends and really been able to explore the country. Lastly I'd like to say that despite the recent news of drug violence, living in Mexico feels safe (although I couldn't recommend living in Juarez or Tijuana.)
