Should I Teach English Online?

By April 14, 2012

Follow me on:

One of the fastest growing opportunities for teaching English is online. There are certain benefits and trade-offs, but the amount of online English teaching positions is steadily growing. The competition can be brutal. I've heard of companies that offer daily tutoring with tutors from the Philippines going for as little as five dollars an hour. As with everything other industry, it looks like global competition is picking up in the English teaching business.

Still, there are plenty of opportunities depending on your qualifications and teaching experience. These articles can serve as a guide to looking at online teaching / tutoring positions as an alternative to the traditional route of teaching overseas or at a local English language school.

I wouldn’t worry about the competition in the Philippines because there are MANY students around the world who want to practice their already learned English with natural born English speakers (and they will pay more for this).

I taught English online all by myself from my home. I made money and met lots of cool students too.

I agree with John, there are MANY students that are looking to learn English around the world, which is the beauty of the internet – they can connect with you wherever you are.

For tutors that are looking to get started online, I recommend http://www.chalksy.com, an online tutoring marketplace that connects tutors and learners.

I’m a Spanish & English tutor!
