Here is an upper intermediate level test divided into four parts:

  1. Verb Forms - conjugation of verbs in various tenses
  2. Vocabulary - multiple choice questions testing vocabulary and vocabulary use knowledge
  3. Sentence Transformation - changing sentences to use various, synonymous forms
  4. Error Correction - finding errors in spelling, usage, etc.

To begin with, here is part I - Verb Forms. Click on the links at the bottom of each page to move on to the next section of the test.

QUESTION 1: VERB FORMS

Put The Verbs in Parentheses into the Correct Tense. Once you have decided on your answer, click on the arrow to check if you are correct.

EXAMPLE: John is (be) very tall.

  1. Unfortunately, the traffic held me up. When I arrived at the airport, the plane (already/leave).
  2. (you/see) the new Jaguar model yet?
  3. After he (get) home he (make) himself a cup of tea.
  4. What clothes (you/take) with you on holiday next week?
  5. I (watch) TV when Mary telephoned.
  6. When I was young our family (go) on picnics every Sunday.
  7. Don't worry Mary (be/always) late.
  8. Unless you (study) , you (not/pass) the exam.
  9. You look tired!
    Yes, I feel tired. I (work) a lot recently.
  10. I (be used to/get up) early in the morning now, but before I wasn't.
